Sustainable innovation and intermodality at the heart of Short Sea Shipping in the Mediterranean: the Tarros case study as a model of scalable logistics

SRM continues its analysis of innovation in the maritime economy with a new in-depth study based on the case study of the Tarros Group, an Italian leader in shipping and integrated logistics in the Mediterranean. The paper analyses the integration of innovation, digitalisation, alternative fuels (HVO), intermodality and ESG policies, showing how the green transition can improve competitiveness, efficiency and quality of work in the maritime logistics sector.

This new issue of Maritime Innovation offers an in‑depth analysis of the Tarros Group as a benchmark case of sustainable innovation in Mediterranean Short Sea Shipping. Through the adoption of alternative fuels such as HVO, the digitalisation of logistics processes, the introduction of low‑emission technologies in port terminals and an advanced intermodal strategy, Tarros demonstrates how decarbonisation and operational efficiency can coexist and reinforce each other.
The paper also highlights the central role of social policies and people within the group’s ESG strategy, showing how welfare initiatives, training and new organisational models foster resilience and long‑term value creation. The Tarros case aligns with the European vision of a greener, more digital and interconnected Blue Economy.
